How to Get a Texas Driver License

The Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) administers the driving and knowledge exams for the state of Texas. The Texas DMV (TxDMV) oversees vehicles licensing so even though we normally think of the DMV as the place to go to get a driver license, DPS is where you go in Texas.

Drivers under the age of 25 are required to complete a driver education course and present their certificate at the license office at the time of testing. Those that have completed driver education will not be required to take the knowledge test.

How to Get a Texas CDL

The path to getting a CDL begins with obtaining a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). A CLP must be held for a minimum of 14 days prior to being allowed to take a CDL skills test.

When studying for the Texas CDL permit you’ll need to give special attention to Section 14 of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Handbook. This section, called Special Requirements, is unique to Texas. In order to get a learners license you’ll need to be thoroughly familiar with the information contained in Special Requirements. Even seasoned, professional commercial drivers NEED to study this handbook before making application for a CDL.
