How to Get an Alaska Driver License

14 to 16 years old – Instruction Permit

  1. Go to your local DMV
  2. Bring the following documents:
    • Parental consent (Form 433)
    • Proof of your Legal name and Date of Birth (“Primary document”)
    • A second document to verify your “primary document”
    • Proof of your principal residence
    • Proof of your Social Security Number
    • Proof of Name change (if needed)
  3. Pass the written knowledge test
  4. Pass a vision test
  5.  Pay $15

While you are practicing to drive you must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience. When you get your permit, you will also be given the printed Parent’s Supervised Driving Program. Use this program to log your 40 hours of driving needed for your license.

Instruction permits are valid for two years, and may be renewed one time.


16 to 18 years old – Provisional License 

  1. Apply for your provisional license at your local DMV office
  2. Pass a road test

You must have held a learner’s permit for a minimum of 6 months. Your parent, legal guardian or employer must provide proof that you have had at least forty 40 hours of driving experience.


18 and older – Driver’s License

  1. Apply for a driver license at your local DMV office
  2. Submit Form 478 (which can be filled out and printed in advance)
  3. Bring documents that prove your name and birth date, your current residence and your social security number
  4. Pass following tests
    1. Knowledge test
    2. Vision test
    3. Road test
    4. Alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test
  5. Pay $20 fee


How to Get an Alaska CDL

The path to getting a CDL begins with obtaining a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). A CLP must be held for a minimum of 14 days prior to being allowed to take a CDL skills test.
