State Driver License Requirements

Each state has its own driver license requirements. Getting your driver license varies from state-to-state as do rules and regulations. Even though there are some national standards regarding traffic laws and road signs, they’re different enough that moving to a new state could require restudying for the knowledge test.

A commercial driver license is based on national standards established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. This makes CDL tests essentially the same from state-to-state with a few exceptions like Texas and New York, which have additional requirements.

Motorcycle licenses, or endorsements as some states say, are generally the same from state-to-state since they’re based on work from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Still, each state has their own rules covering helmet use, three-wheel motorcycles, lane splitting, and so on.
