How to Get an Iowa Driver License
The Iowa Department of Transportation (IOWA DOT) administers the driving and knowledge exams for the state of Iowa. Even though we normally think of the DMV as the place to go to get a driver license in most states, DOT is where you go in Iowa.
Drivers under the age of 18 must follow a three-step graduated licensing scheme. Beginning with an instruction permit at 14 years of age, an intermediate license at 16, and finally a full driver license at 17. There are restrictions that come with the first two license types, such as the number of passengers and nighttime driving limits. Applying for an intermediate license also requires the completion of an Iowa-approved driver education course.
How to Get an Iowa CDL
The path to getting a CDL begins with obtaining a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). A CLP must be held for a minimum of 14 days prior to being allowed to take a CDL skills test.
